OVERJOYED at having shaken hands with US President Barack Obama, Shanghai student Chen Xiao wrote a new MSN message line: “Hands won''t be washed for a few days”.
Chen and 500 other college students met Obama in Shanghai last week. The 48-year-old Obama, who is the first US president to visit China in the first year of office, was friendly and approachable to the young people.
As they pursued individual success, Obama urged Chinese college students to ask themselves the question: “Can I do it differently?” He shared his own experience with the audience.
In addition to “constantly trying to improve and to think in new ways”, he said that students should think not only of themselves but of something larger.
He said: “I think so many of us, we get caught up with wanting to make money for ourselves and have a nice car and have a nice house and – all those things are important, but the people who really make their mark on the world is because they have a bigger ambition.
“They say, how can I feed hungry people? Or, how can I help teach children who don''t have an education? Or, how can I bring about peaceful resolution (解决方案) of conflicts? Those are the people I think who end up making such a big difference in the world.”
During his talk, Obama said that “young people are the best ambassador”. To foster (增强) mutual (共同的) understanding between the younger generations of China and the US, the President said his country would further expand its youth exchanges with China. According to the joint (联合的) statement issued on November 17, in the next four years over 100,000 American students will come to China to study. More Chinese students will be encouraged to study in the US, too.
This may suggest to Chinese students that it will become easier to study in the US.
“The US visa application and scholarship policies are tight. I hope I''ll benefit from the Obama adminsitration''s move,” said Xu Wanjing, 15, from Shanghai Shangnan High School, who is working hard for the SATs (美国高考).
Exchanges increase
More than 11,000 Americans studied in China last year, a 25 percent increase over the previous year, according to the Institute of International Education in the United States.
At the same time, Chinese students are the second largest group of foreign students in the US, and their numbers are on the rise. Last year, 81,000 mainland students went to the US, a 20 percent increase from 2008.
