Obama and JFK 来源:
Young, charismatic, confident, eloquent and most importantly, promised to change. Obama, as the newly eclected president of the United of America, has many similarities with late president John. F. Kennedy except the color of their skins.
What Obama faces is a country consumed by two losing wars, financial meltdown, and the country's fading international influence. Thus change is necessary to reverse this situation. However, change may come at a cost. The country Obama is facing nowadays is pretty the same with the one facing J.F.K back in the 1960s when America was confronted, internationally with a hostile socialistic bloc led by Soviet Union and domestically with surging human rights movement. Once he was elected, J.F.K wanted to end the Vietnam war which cost America billions of dollars and tens of thousands of lives. The decision was welcomed by American public but hated by those military generals and weapon manufacturers who stood to benefit hugely from the ongoing war in Vietnam. Those Cuban exiles and some CIA agents also hated J.F.K because he cut the financial aid to CIA which is the chief sponsor of Cuban anti-Castro militarists. Racists hated J.F.C because he was a president who was ready to give ethnic group people, Africa American people to be specific, more deserved human rights according to the Constitution of USA. Some military senior officials hated J.F.K and saw him as a coward because he wanted to end the cold war with Soviet Union to prevent a possible nuclear warfare so that our children might have a better world to live in. All these J.F.K wanted to change. However, those people who hated him would never give him the chance to change. (Materials derived from the movie JFC ). On November 22nd, 1963, he was shot three times during his visit to the city of Dallas and died in the hospital. The assassin was captured and was mysterious shot in a building surrounded by hundreds of FBI agents. Later, JFC’s brother Robert Kennedy was also shot during his presidential election campaign. A man who loved his country and was loved by his people sacrificed his live to bring change to his country.
Obama, the president-elect promised and is promising changes too. He is to change a country plagued by financial meltdown which is quickly turning into economic recession. Americans are pinning their hopes on him to find a way to reverse the current crisis, which proves to be no easy task. The Illinois senator is elected thanks mostly to his promise to the voters that he will navigate the country through the current disaster if he is elected. Change also means that he need to restore America’s global leadership which has been serious undermined by the country’s reckless war in both Iraq and Afghanistan in the name of fighting terrorism. Obama promised to withdraw troops from Iraq once elected, which is welcomed by most of American people but will certainly harm the vested interests of some people. No change will come without damaging the interests of certain groups. So the very person who initiates these changes will come under accuse or even worse, attack. One disadvantage also likely to put Obama at risk is the fact that he is an Afica American. There is already an attempt on his life by some of the neo-Nazists according to newspapers. The security personnels for the president of USA got to be on their guards all the time.
I do hope the young and charismatic Obama can fulfill his promises to his people during his four years stay in the white house.
