Obama makes history
Posted Wed, 11/12/2008 - 10:58 by jean.chen
Broad victory
Campaigning as a technocratic agent of change, Barack Obama swept to victory over Sen. John McCain, whose running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, was seeking to become the nation’s first female vice president.
Mr. Obama beat Mr. McCain by 52 percent to 46 percent and can realistically claim a mandate with nearly two-thirds of the Electoral College. With one state still undeclared, he had 364 electoral votes compared to 173 for McCain.
Mr. Obama should have a strongly supportive Congress with which to work. Not since 1993 has an incoming president had such strong majorities in both houses of Congress. Democrats will hold 258 of the 435 seats in the House and at least 55 of the 100 seats in the Senate.
Mr. Obama, the son of a Kenyan father and a white mother from Kansas won overwhelmingly among African-American voters, but he also won among women and Latino voters. And he won by more than 2-to-1 among voters of all races 30 years old and younger.
America transformed
The percentage of Americans who voted was unmatched in at least a generation and perhaps since 1908, according to election experts.
Georgia Rep. John Lewis, a legend of the civil rights movement of the 1960s, said he was “overwhelmed” and had broken down in tears. “I never imagined, I never even had any idea I would live to see an African-American president of the United States,” Mr. Lewis said in an interview on MSNBC.
“We have witnessed tonight in America a revolution of values, a revolution of ideals,” he said. “There’s been a transformation of America, and it will have unbelievable influence on the world.”
Election experts said nearly 140 million Americans voted, many of them minority, immigrant and younger Americans who were casting their ballots for the first time.
Obama’s challenges
As Barack Obama prepares to take office on January 20, he will have to wrestle with being the first U.S. president to take office when the nation is at war and in recession at the same time in over 70 years.
In a recent interview with Time magazine, Mr. Obama listed five priority issues of energy, taxes, health care, education and immigration. Of these, the foremost task is stabilizing the banks.
Moreover, the powerful lobbyists and party elders will compete to influence his domestic policies and it may be difficult for Mr. Obama to stick to his original plan. His stimulus proposal means more budget deficits and he did not explain how he could balance the budget.
He was an opponent to the Iraq war from the start, but he will be forced to compromise on his positions on anti-terrorism issues, given the strong resistance to his withdrawal plan from leading generals in the armed forces.
Mr. Obama clearly favors a shift to Afghanistan from Iraq but the move needs more money. Meanwhile, Iran, the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, and Cuba, will also be his challenges.
