Polls through the summer and early fall showed a hotly contested race, and McCain, Obama and their running mates made nearly weekly visits to Michigan. But as the Wall Street economic crisis broke, McCain's polling numbers fell, and his once-high favorability ratings with Michigan voters plummeted.
