Mr. Obama picked the North Carolina Tar Heels to beat the Kentucky Wildcats in the final of this year’s N.C.A.A. men’s basketball tournament.
Missouri and Ohio State — both from crucial swing states — round out the president’s Final Four.
In explaining his picks, which was broadcast on ESPN on Wednesday morning, Mr. Obama took an approach that should sound familiar to those following the Republican primaries.
”I’m big on momentum, especially in a tournament like this one,” Mr. Obama told ESPN’s Andy Katz. “So whoever is looking hotter at the end of the year, those are teams that I tend to be a little more inclined to pick.”
Just as he has in previous years, Mr. Obama selected the higher seed to advance to the next round most of the time, with a few exceptions. He has all four 10th seeds upsetting the seventh seeds in the first-round. And in an apparent change of heart since recording his picks with ESPN, his online bracket has Virginia Commonwealth, the 12th seed and the Cinderella Final Four team last year, winning its first game over fifth-seeded Wichita State.
His biggest upset: North Carolina State, an 11th seed, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen.
“Other than that, it’s all throwing darts,” Mr. Obama said.
Mr. Obama could have selected Harvard, his law school alma mater, which is appearing in the tournament for the first time since 1946. But, he said, Vanderbilt, the fifth seed, is too talented for the Ivy League champs.
“I’ll be rooting for Harvard, but it’s just too much of a stretch,” Mr. Obama explained.
Mr. Obama, who attended a tournament game with the Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain on Tuesday night, announced his Final Four on his campaign Web site before releasing the full bracket on ESPN. His campaign allowing supporters to fill out their own brackets and compete head-to-head with the president.
