Obama's popularity still steady in ChinaIn February, just over one month after being sworn into office, Obama sent Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to China, where she made it clear to Chinese leaders that America's relationship with China was crucial to Barack Obama's goal of tackling the global economic crisis.本科
And in July, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke traveled to China to discuss cooperation on clean energy initiatives.
In August, the new US ambassador to China, Jon Huntsman, said his top priority was to take US-China relations to new heights.
In late October, Defense Secretary Robert Gates told visiting Chinese General Xu Caihou that US-China military ties were too important to be derailed by occasional disagreements.
"Through his own comments and the remarks of other members of his Administration, I think Obama has made clear the continued importance of the China-US relationship," said James Fallows, a veteran American journalist for The Atlantic magazine, who is now based in Beijing.
"His words and policies have shown an awareness of all the different aspects of that policy, from cooperating on financial-rescue measures and potentially on climate and environmental issues, to working out potential disagreements elsewhere," Fallows explained.
But for now, expectations are high for Obama's first China visit.
"I hope Obama will make his China agenda clearer to the Chinese people when he is here," said Yang Xiao, a graduate student in the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China.
Li Yingzi, another student at the university, said, "The US has realized that it's unrealistic to expect a global recovery without Chinese cooperation, and Obama looks like the right person to make that happen."
